Do I need to do an inventory of my rental

Renters insurance is something that many people don’t really think much about until they suffer a loss and realize that they need it and don’t have it. When something bad happens and you have renters insurance, you will need to file a claim. A home inventory makes that much easier. At Chastain Agency Inc. in Gainesville, GA our years of experience have given us lots of knowledge when it comes to renters insurance and we are always happy to share that experience with our customers.

Homeowners are encouraged to have a home inventory but is it really necessary for you to have one for your rental? The simple answer is yes. Making the inventory takes time and is not fun but filing a claim is not a lot of fun and when you are already stressed out by whatever loss you have suffered, adding the stress of trying to remember all the things that you had before may just be one thing too many.

At the very least, you can go through all your rooms and take pictures especially of any higher value items like electronics. Put your receipts together with these photos and you have a bare minimum inventory. You can always add to it with more detail about things in drawers and closets etc. If you own any valuable jewelry or art, having an appraisal is a must. Be sure to store your inventory in a safe place.

There is no law saying that you need to have an inventory of your rental but you will be so glad that you did it is you ever have to file a claim for a loss.  Don’t wait until it is too late to cover your possessions with renters insurance.
